New Zealand moves post-study work visa applications online in November

New Zealand will move applications for the new Short-Term Graduate Work Visa and the Post-Study Work Visa to enhanced Immigration Online on November 16, 2026.

From that date, applicants will be able to use the online system to track progress and submit applications under the latest requirements. New paper Post-Study Work Visa applications will no longer be accepted after November 15. Paper applications submitted on or before that date will continue to be processed.

Filing windows still matter

The application channel does not replace the eligibility deadline.

The official update says a person applying for the new Short-Term Graduate Work Visa must apply within three months after their student visa expires. Someone whose student visa expired before August 16 will therefore not be eligible for that route when applications open on November 16.

Post-Study Work Visa filing windows can be three, six or twelve months, depending on what the applicant studied and what visa they held. Applicants need to check the rule that applies to their own history.

Student applicants urged to file earlier

Immigration New Zealand separately advised prospective international students to apply for a student visa at least three months before a course begins.

The agency says application volumes rise before major study intakes and a late application may not be decided before travel or the course start date. It identifies India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Pakistan as markets where applicants should be especially mindful of early filing.

What to do

An applicant approaching the November transition should confirm the correct visa, the personal filing deadline and which channel is available on the submission date. A paper application filed by November 15 may continue, while new applications after that point use the enhanced online route.

These are study and post-study pathways. They are not general digital-nomad or remote-work visas.
