Microsoft Entra reaches September passkey rollout milestone
September 6, 2026 back issue. Reporting cutoff: September 4, 2026. Prepared and published retrospectively on September 17, 2026; later developments are not included.
Microsoft’s July 13 announcement set September 1, 2026 as the beginning of a passkey rollout for Microsoft Entra ID in the public cloud. The date is an implementation milestone for an earlier decision.
The provider’s announcement describes registration prompts as the rollout reaches organizations. It does not establish that every tenant completed the transition on September 1.
Check your organization’s setup
For a remote employee or contractor, the relevant next step is to ask the account administrator which sign-in methods are supported and when instructions will apply. An organizational account should not be treated as interchangeable with a personal one.
A passkey uses cryptographic credentials associated with the legitimate service. Setting one up still requires attention to the approved device, the account policy and recovery if that device becomes unavailable.
Prepare before a move
Test the approved method while your usual support route is available. Avoid removing a working method before understanding the transition instructions. Use a trusted sign-in route rather than following an unexpected registration link.
Our work-account preparation guide brings those checks together. Administrators can use the official Microsoft documentation resource for planning, while confirming the requirements of their own environment.
This report describes the announced rollout timetable, not an independent audit of deployment across Microsoft customers.
