ESTA

ESTA, the Electronic System for Travel Authorization, is the U.S. pre-travel authorization system used by travelers seeking to travel under the Visa Waiver Program.

It is an authorization to travel under that program, rather than a visa or an admission decision. A traveler must still meet the program’s eligibility conditions and undergo the applicable border checks. Approval does not grant a right to employment, residence or an extension of an authorized stay.

The practical distinction is between three questions: whether the traveler qualifies for the Visa Waiver Program, whether the required travel authorization is approved, and whether the traveler is admitted on arrival. Answering one does not settle the others.

Before a trip, verify the current requirements for the passport and intended activities. Do not rely on an old approval email as a substitute for checking the authorization’s status and whether a new application is required.
