U.S. Admit Until Date: how to check a fixed admission
The Admit Until Date on Form I-94 shows how long a person is authorized to remain in the United States after a particular entry, unless an approved extension or another lawful change modifies that period.
It is not the same as the expiration date printed on a visa.
Visa validity and authorized stay are different
A visa is generally used to request entry at a port of entry. Form I-94 records the classification and authorized period after admission. A visa may remain valid beyond the I-94 end date, or expire while a person is still within an authorized I-94 period.
The I-94 therefore needs its own check after every arrival.
Fixed dates for F, J and I categories
Effective September 15, 2026, the United States replaced duration-of-status admissions for F students, J exchange visitors and I foreign-media representatives with fixed admission periods.
The period is generally tied to the relevant program or document, limited to no more than four years, and followed by a thirty-day departure period. The exact outcome can depend on classification, program dates, travel and transition treatment.
A practical check after entry
- Retrieve the I-94 from the official U.S. government service after admission.
- Confirm the name, passport information and immigration classification.
- Find the Admit Until Date and compare it with the relevant program document.
- Save a copy and calendar the date well before it arrives.
- Ask the responsible school, exchange-program office, employer counsel or qualified immigration professional to correct an error or evaluate an extension.
Travel and transition questions
International travel can place a person into the fixed-date framework on re-entry even when transition treatment applied before departure. People considering travel near an optional-practical-training filing, program completion or extension should check the category-specific consequence first.
Common mistakes
Do not assume a visa expiration date authorizes a stay until that date. Do not assume an old D/S admission remains unchanged after a new entry. Do not rely on a calendar reminder without first verifying that the I-94 record is correct.
This guide explains the records. It does not determine an individual’s lawful status or extension eligibility.
